Brain implant could restore speech 

Patients with a temporary surgical implant have used regions of the brain that control speech to “talk” to a computer for the first time, manipulating a cursor on a computer screen simply by saying or thinking of a particular sound. FULL STORY

Universes at Edison April 15 and 16

Five years since Hurricane Katrina struck — overwhelming levees, killing hundreds and putting 80 percent of New Orleans under water — the terrible images have receded from headlines and popular memory. Yet lives remain broken. Dancers, drummers and dignitaries participate in the Grand Entry at the 21st annual Pow Wow at WUSTL April 9. This year’s Pow Wow, a festival of American Indian cultures, brought together some of the largest numbers of dancers and drummers in the event’s history. In addition to dancing, singing and drumming, visitors enjoyed a number of traditional arts and crafts and community information booths. MORE

  • Softball sweeps doubleheader against Webster. Freshman Maggie Mullen drove in five runs and junior Olivia Cook threw a complete-game shutout as the Bears posted a doubleheader sweep against Webster University at home April 10. Mullen had a home run and three RBIs in the Bears’ 6-3 Game 1 victory, while Cook allowed just two hits in a 5-0 win in Game 2. WUSTL (24-7-1) returns to action Wednesday, April 13, for a doubleheader at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo.
